Budget-Friendly Kyoto Stay: Inside Ichiyo-an Homestay

Kyoto has always been one of those places that feels like stepping into a different era—quiet streets, traditional houses, and that timeless charm you can’t quite explain. During our trip, we wanted a stay that matched that experience without going over budget. That’s how we found Ichiyo-an Homestay.

Why We Chose Ichiyo-an at Gion, Kyoto, Japan

When planning our Kyoto trip, we wanted something more than just a place to sleep—we wanted an experience. Ichiyo-an stood out because it offered a glimpse of what a traditional Japanese home actually feels like, from the layout to the overall atmosphere. It wasn’t just accommodation; it felt like living in Kyoto, even just for a few days.

It also worked perfectly for our group. Traveling as a family of eight can be challenging when it comes to finding affordable and comfortable accommodation. Ichiyo-an gave us enough space to stay together while still keeping costs manageable—something that’s hard to find in a location as prime as Gion.

On top of that, its location in Gion made it even more appealing—close to key attractions while still offering a peaceful neighborhood vibe.

First Impressions

From the outside, Ichiyo-an looks like a typical home—simple in design, with a few plants on the side adding a quiet charm. It doesn’t try to stand out, which actually makes it blend beautifully with the surrounding Kyoto neighborhood.

Once you step inside, the atmosphere immediately shifts. You can really feel the authentic Japanese ambiance—calm, minimal, and thoughtfully arranged. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down and appreciate the simplicity of traditional living.

Rooms

The house is a two-story traditional Japanese home, designed in a simple and practical way that fits both comfort and function for a group stay.

Upon entering, you’ll find a small space that quietly “welcomes” you in. This is where we placed our shoes and luggage. Right beside it, there’s a framed set of house rules, neatly displayed, reminding guests to keep things organized and respectful. From this area, a staircase leads up to the second floor.

Moving further inside the ground floor, you’ll see the main shared spaces: a cozy living room, a functional kitchen, a small toilet room, and one bedroom with two beds. Everything is compact but thoughtfully arranged, making it easy to move around even with a group.

On the second floor, you’ll find the remaining rooms and another toilet. The rooms vary in size—some are more spacious, while others are just right for simple rest. There’s also a cabinet provided for storage, which helps keep belongings organized throughout the stay.

Location

Ichiyo-an is located in a quiet neighborhood in Gion, Kyoto, which immediately sets the tone for a calm and respectful stay. The area is so peaceful that you’ll naturally find yourself lowering your voice—it’s the kind of environment where silence feels part of the experience.

Despite being tucked away in a serene spot, the homestay is still very close to major attractions. You can easily walk or take a short ride to nearby temples, traditional streets, and cultural landmarks.

The Catch

Ichiyo-an offers a beautifully serene and overall memorable stay, but there’s one important thing to note: it’s located near a cemetery.
